Dear Fellow Caledonians and friends,

Just a wee reminder, as time is ticking past so quickly Saturday 27th November “Picnic in the Park” 1pm to 4pm. We are trying out the Afternoon function as members have a long way to travel, If we can make a success of this (number wise) we can start to plan for a “Burns Lunch” instead of a Night function. This may be the way forward under the circumstances we are living with today. Member and friends wishing to attend please give an indication so we have an idea of how many roughly to expect.

What you must bring.

Garden Umbrellas, Picnic chairs or blankets, Sunblock and Food. There are Braai facilities at Herbert Park, 4 very big ones by the Lapa; you would need charcoal or Firewood, firelighters and any Meat you want to Braai.

Please come in traditional Dress; let’s be proud to show the Tartan.

What you mustn’t bring is

Alcohol Herbert Park is licenced premises and has by law the sole distribution rights of alcohol and taking Alcohol on to the premises is illegal

We can always get Vista or Fiona to fetch and carry for a small gratuity.

Our programme for the day includes a few formalities. Final order to be sorted out.

 Welcome.

A Short Address to St Andrew.

Badging of Chief, Consort and other office bearers

Badging of National Chieftain and Consort

Performances by the Pipe Band

Hopefully we will have a Highland Dancer (still to be confirmed)

We have been given permission by Herbert Park President to use the Bowling Green should you like to have a wee dance (long time since we had that) but Without Shoes, (Socks or bare feet, OK) on Bowling Green.

We have a few other items in the planning stage (yet to be confirmed)

There are facilities for children, so don’t leave them at home, we are a family Society, though many of the previous Kids have grown up.

This will be posted on the St Andrews WhatsApp group and on the website. You can join the WhatsApp group by the following link below:

The Highland Province is scheduled to host Congress 2022 and any ideas would be greatly appreciated e.g. Venue, How many would be willing to come. I think we need a little chinwag to map out the way we can keep the total cost down to a minimum for people from outside the Highland Province. Thoughts welcome to tommy@tommystoys.co.za

3/11/2021 November Newsletter
Dear Fellow Caledonians and friends,

After a very successful A.G.M. we welcome Kate Pringle as Secretary and Mark to the committee, we may be small but we got plenty of the Scottish Passion.

We have decided to have a “Picnic in the Park” on Saturday 27th of November from 1pm until about 4pm as our St Andrews Day Function (NO Charge for Members and Guests) but we expect to hold a wee raffle.

Will take place in the Shaded area up the top of Herbert Park by the wall of remembrance, quite a bit of natural shade with trees etc.

What you must bring.

Garden Umbrellas, Picnic chairs or blankets, Sunblock and Food. There are Braai facilities at Herbert Park, 4 very big ones by the Lapa; you would need charcoal or Firewood, firelighters and any Meat you want to Braai.

Indoor Hall

Since the A.G.M. we participated in the business meeting of Congress on Zoom from St Andrews House, It’s amazing what modern technology can do, linked us up with all the other societies countrywide as well as observers from Scotland. Well done East London the hosts.

The new Federation Chief Roxanne Perrit and Lady President Sue Perrit were installed, as well as myself as National Chieftain via Zoom, Mark as Consort will be installed at St Andrews Day.

It’s now time for Society building, so all your friends, in fact anyone who is interested in the Scottish culture is more than welcome to join up.

Fees are current member are fully paid up until 31st May 2022

Dear Members,

I have cancelled the hall booking for the proposed function scheduled for 8th May.

Sadly only one response and it was negative (understood under the circumstances)

I had asked for a read receipt only one was received. The only positive response was an email I received from Wits Rifles Pipe Band.

See below.

Hi Tommy,

I trust you  are doing well

How are the arrangements going?

The guys are wanting to go as the whole band has confirmed that they will be there.

Cheers

Rodney.

The Idea of a “Burns Memorial Supper” towards end of July, (Actual date 27th we would obviously have to work around that)

is still there. But before starting to make any arrangements we really need feedback.

I hope that sometime in June we can have our A.G.M. then we can plan a way forward for what was, once the biggest Society remaining in the Federation.

Aye Yours

Tommy and Mark (Chief and Consort)

16th January 2021

Dear Fellow Caledonians and friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that Past Chief of St Andrews Scottish Society “Andrew Kelly” was called to higher service early this morning, 16/01/2021. Not only is this a huge loss to “The Kelly Family”, it is a big loss to the Caledonian Movement in South Africa. Andrew served as Chief of St Andrews on several occasions, Provincial Chieftain and Consort to Jean when she was Federation Chief.
Our sincere condolences to Jean and all the Family.

Andrew has played a major roll not only in St Andrews, but in Congresses, Central Council and was a big follower of all the Scottish Gatherings in fact anything to do with Scottish Culture Andrew and Jean were always there.

It has been decided after consultation with the Pipe Band to cancel our “Burns Night” due to the Lockdown regulations, the Alcohol Ban and the Curfew.

Further details will be circulated when available.
This has been one of the hardest newsletters I have ever had to compose.

Aye yours
Tommy Soutar (Chief)

Dear Fellow Caledonians and friends,

It has been a sad year for St Andrews and other Societies, with no Functions, no Gatherings. Our Last Function was :

“Burns Night” and our next one will be “Burns Night” again.

We have booked the Hall for Saturday 6th February, hoping that the restrictions in place at the moment will be relaxed and people will be able to return to a reasonable lifestyle.

We have to start the ball rolling, so we need a commitment from Members and Friends to let us know whether to proceed or not. The cost to the Society could be huge if we go ahead without first getting the commitment. We can’t go ahead and end up with a “Pipe Band”, “Highland Dancer” to end up with 8 – 10 members turning up.

  1. A) There will be “Haggis” along with the usual Main Course, and Desert.
  2. B) The estimated cost around R100.00 a Head, again a thumb suck. We will hold a meeting early January to discuss the finer points, and revert back to you.
  3. C) We will possibly still be restricted to smaller attendees, unless the restrictions are lifted, again hopefully.
  4. D) We will have to fit into any curfews that are in place, so it may have to start earlier and finish earlier than usual.

Past Chief Glenys Kelly has donated a 4.5ltr “Dewar’s White Label Scotch Whisky” that was Robins, has to date back to the 1970’s -1980’s when Robin was still organising the Gatherings, as there is no seal over the top of the bottle cap, only inside the Plastic Cap and the label is a bit worse for wear, comes with the Cradle, Value on Google $249.00   (3,619.10 South African Rand)

We want to raffle off 100 tickets @ R20.00 a ticket to help subsidise The Haggis. The tickets can be bought from our treasurer and EFT’d to the Societies Bank Account Nedbank, Bedfordview Branch 192-505   A/C no 1915127386. It will help a lot if you do an EFT say R100 = 5 tickets Put your Name on it, send the proof of payment to, gannyone47@yahoo.com or easier still WhatsApp the pic of slip to 084 438 2024. You must be there or organise someone to collect as this is too fragile to send.

As we have missed out usual Christmas party, and see little planned for New-year with restrictions in place, Mark, Myself, and the Committee to wish you a Blessed Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Dear Fellow Caledonians and Friends,It is with regret that we have had to cancel the Function planned for the 28th of November as the only response we have had is from the Pipe Band and 8 other members. We cannot afford to lose on a function like this and Herbert Park needs notification or we would have to pay R500.00 for a no show. Also the catering would be a problem. We will therefore make our next Function Burns Night first Saturday in Feb 2021.RegardsTommy Soutar (Chief)

October 2020

Dear Fellow Caledonians and friends,

Just a wee update, we had hoped to open up on the 24th October with our delayed “Welcome to the Federation Chief” but, The Federation Lady President is unable to travel at the moment as she is going in for a Hip Op and cant travel from Bloemfontein to Joburg and back, and the Federation Chief is being messed around by the Airlines as she tries to get off to visit her Family in UK. We will look at another date in the New Year.

We will still have a function on the 28th of November to celebrate St Andrews Night, we will send out the details once all is put together so, Please Diarise the Date.

On Sunday the 1st of November Herbert Park will be having their annual Cancer Awareness Day. “Wear something Pink” A Percentage of the takings on this day will go to Hospice Alberton. There will be Bowls for the Serious Players and Fun Bowls for the Family (Bowls are available for free usage) and there will be Coaches to give you some tips.

In addition a Flea market will be run to raise funds for the Club, as you will be well aware they are in “dire straits” after a 6 months closure, and still having to pay Rates, Water, Electricity, partial wages, (grounds had to be kept in order) Insurance and Security. If during the Lockdown you have been Spring Cleaning, and you have stuff you want to get rid of you can drop it off at Herbert Park to be sold on the day.

There will be Food on sale (or bring your Picnic Basket) Music, as usual the Bar will be fully stocked, at Club Prices and Specials will be run during the Day. I will forward the Poster as soon as it’s available.

On Heritage Day 24th September Mark and I represented the St Andrews by playing Fun Bowls at Herbert Park in Kilts. It was Fun.

On Saturday we also took part in the East London Zoom Ceilidh (also a first time thing for Mark and I) which has now been uploaded to YouTube link https://youtu.be/psnhnKZNaK4  Individual contributions are in the process of being uploaded and we will be notified when completed.

Pics from 24th September, Hat and Hair for Sun Protection (Hee, Hee)Bring your family and friends for a great day out.

That’s about all for Now Herbert Park Calendar is quite full so our Function after St Andrews Night will probably be “Burns Night”
