Please let me have interesting articles for the letters, this is from a letter I wrote in 2009!

Tips on Saving!

DON’T waste money on expensive iPods. Simply think of your favourite tune and hum it. If you want to “switch tracks”, simply think of another song you like and hum that instead.
DON’T waste money buying expensive binoculars; simply stand closer to the object you wish to view.
SAVE electricity by turning off all the lights in your house and walking around wearing a miner’s hat.
HOUSEWIVES, the best way to get two bottles of washing-up liquid for the price of one is by putting one in your shopping trolley and the other in your coat pocket.
OLD telephone directories make ideal personal address books, simply cross out the names and address of people you don’t know.
SAVE on booze by drinking cold tea instead of whisky. The following morning you can create the effects of a hangover by drinking a thimble-full of washing up liquid and banging your head repeatedly on the wall.
SAVE a fortune on laundry bills. Give your dirty shirts to the hospice shop, they will wash and iron them and you can buy them back for fifty cents.
MAKE your own inexpensive mints by leaving blobs of toothpaste to dry on a window sill. Use striped toothpaste to make humbugs.

Yours Aye,

Mary

After the initial hiccups we finally got the Tea Garden up and running, a bit too late to come out on the right side (profit wise). Barr’s Irn-Bru and the other goodies saved the day and were all but sold out. I have to thank the Ladies who as usual excelled in cooking the Scotch Sausage and Bacon Butties. A great day out, with attendances exceeding last years. Once again to all those who turned out to help set up and take down the décor, bring the cake and shortbread, a big thanks, without you this type of event would be impossible.

Burglary

Please accept my apologies for the nonproduction of the April ScotlandSA.

As you may have heard on the radio or read in the papers, your editor’s house was burgled and lap-top computers stolen. There are suspicious circumstances in that nothing else was stolen, except a few items from the bar!

What the media failed to report is that the computers contained a lot of Caledonian Society information which is now lost. This inevitably disrupted the publication of this newsletter.

From the Federation Chief’s Desk, April 2012

Greetings and Salutations. I hope all have had a peaceful and safe Easter.

David and I travelled to East London, arriving there on Friday morning after an uneventful journey, except for all the “Stop/Go’s” and we were caught on each of them.

We were warmly welcomed by our host and hostess Cynthia and Elliot Murray. After unpacking and settling in, Elliot took us the Selbourne College fields where the Eastern Cape Gathering was to take place. We spent a restful morning, watching others preparing the fields, for the dancing, piping and band events.

On Friday evening, we enjoyed a Cocktail Party at our hosts’ home. Here we met with the members and committee of the East London Society. Also present were visitors from other Cape Societies. At this event we were presented with a very unusual gift, a replica of a Scottish Targe, (a round Scottish shield). This was personally crafted by our very gifted host, who is a very competent Carpenter.

Saturday morning saw us at the Selbourne fields for the start of the Gathering. The gathering was small but the spirit good and the weather played with. David and I performed a couple of duties i.e.; to open the gathering and present the prizes at the end. Well done to the East London Society for a job well done.

On Sunday morning we attended “Sun Rise” Church Service at Nahoon beach. Again the weather was great. It was fantastic to watch the sun come up over the sea.

On Monday morning we made our way home. Again, we would like to thank our hosts, the Murrays and the East London Society for a most enjoyable weekend. Good luck to all in East London.

From Chief Sandra Rankin

Saturday 7th April dawned bright and sunny, just perfect for a very successful Eastern Cape Highland Gathering. Four Pipe Bands competed together with lots of individual competitors, Highland and Irish dancing was well supported and Scottish Country dancing featured amongst the competitions for the first time for many years.

Numerous stall holders added to the festive air and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We were honoured to have the Chief and Lady President of the Federated Caledonian Society with us for their official visit. Chief Dave Brown officially opened the Gathering while Lady President, Sandy Brown presented the awards.

Many thanks to ALL who contributed to making the Gathering such a wonderful occasion and special thanks to convenor, Dave Rankin, and his committee for their dedication, organisation and hard work over many months.

News from Scotland

Boxing legend Frank Bruno stuns neighbours after moving into Glasgow flat

Steve Smith and Lauren Crooks, Sunday Mail, 6 May

BOXING legend Frank Bruno is taking the high road to love, we can reveal.

The former heavyweight champ has moved in with his Scots girlfriend – to the astonishment of neighbours in Glasgow.

He has been spotted working out on the flat’s balcony, using a tree trunk instead of weights.

And he is often seen out and about behind the wheel of his bright red Bentley, waving to fans and signing autographs.

Frank, 50, arrived in the Gorbals last week to spend more time with hairdresser Nina Coletta.

He looked fit and well after recent treatment for exhaustion.

And the pair looked happier than ever after being reunited in the once tough neighbourhood.

The former champ relaxed at home while pretty Nina left to run her busy hair salon on the outskirts of the city.

He filled his time with regular trips to Green’s gym in Finnieston, showing off his muscular physique as he left the flat wearing just shorts and shoes.

Frank talked about new love Nina when he appeared on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories TV show last month.

He said: “She is a great girl and we get on well. I just want a little bit of happiness for myself. I’m not sure about marriage.”

When he wasn’t pushing weights at Green’s, Frank improvised his own fitness routine, lifting a huge log on Nina’s balcony.

One neighbour said: “Everyone is talking about Bruno, nobody can believe he’s here. He is definitely our most famous resident.

“He was spotted straight away because his car sticks out a mile in this area.

“But he’s been very down-to-earth and very patient with people asking for autographs.

“We see him exercising on the balcony every day. He swings a giant log above his head. It’s either that or dancing to his music in his sunshine.

“He seems well on the road to recovery, and he looks like he is enjoying being in Glasgow.”

For the most part, Bruno’s flash Bentley – with its personalised FRB 1 plate, for Franklin Roy Bruno – stays parked just outside Nina’s apartment building while the couple drive around in her modest Volkswagen Polo.

The happy couple were seen driving around together last week, enjoying blaring music in the sunshine. Frank, dressed in shorts, T-shirt and straw trilby hat, didn’t seem to mind being spotted as he leaned out of the car window puffing a huge cigar.

He later visited Nina at her salon before enjoying a cafe lunch then returning to her fourth-floor flat for a workout.

Soon he was back on the road again, lapping up the attention of his fans as he toured Glasgow with his car stereo on as he, regularly stopped to chat with shoppers and pose for pictures with well-wishers.

An onlooker said: “Big Frank was in his element – he looked really happy with life and loved the fact he was being recognised wherever he went. People were doing double-takes as he drove past, then he’d stop and sign autographs and pose for pictures with fans.

“You just don’t expect to see Frank Bruno driving about in Glasgow.”

Last month, Bruno, who suffers from bipolar disorder and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in 2003, admitted himself to a private hospital suffering from exhaustion.

Friends said he was also heartbroken after a recent split from Nina, though they quickly got back together. And it looks as though Frank might be serious about a permanent move to Glasgow after he was spotted looking at homes for sale in an estate agent’s window.

He told Piers Morgan that Nina has become a big part of his life.

He added: “We’re taking each day as it goes. I can see light at the end of the tunnel.”

The couple started dating last summer after meeting at a function in Scotland where Frank was the star guest.

Owner’s shock as dog is robbed of Ross County top and club ribbons

Daily Record, 4 May

A stunned pet owner has told how his dog was mugged – for its football top.

Greg Cormack had dressed his cocker spaniel Davie in a Ross County T-shirt and red, white and blue club ribbons to mark the team’s First Division title triumph.

But ahead of the celebrations at the Staggies’ home match against Hamilton last weekend, neds snatched 13-year-old Davie from outside Greg’s shop and robbed him of his gear.

Greg, 58 – who has a shoe and drapery store in County’s home town of Dingwall, Easter Ross – said: “I was only distracted for a moment and when I looked out, Davie had gone. It all happened so quick.

“I dashed outside and had a glance down the close next to the shop. And there was Davie – naked. Someone had mugged him. They had taken his Staggieman T-shirt and club colour ribbons. I was staggered.”

Now the hunt is on to find the dog-napper.

Greg added: “Davie is a character and well known on match days. I can’t imagine a Ross County fan doing that to him. And I wouldn’t want to blame a Hamilton supporter either.

“But someone obviously liked the T-shirt and nabbed it off him. We would love to find out who mugged him.

“My wife says Davie needs counselling now as a victim of crime. It was a bizarre incident and Davie seems none the worse for wear for his ordeal.

“We did consider informing the police but as we didn’t have any evidence of who took him, we didn’t want them barking up the wrong tree.”

Newsletter April 2012

Dear Members

A little bit late again. Please accept my apologies.

I know it’s a bit late, but I hope you all had a nice Easter Holiday and spent time with friends and family.

Port Elizabeth’s Bell’s ‘Extra Special’ Caledonian Pipe Band attended the Eastern Cape Highland Gathering in East London and this is the report back from East London Caledonian Society –

Our congratulations go to East London’s ECHG Committee for the success of this function.

Federation Chief’s News

FROM THE CHIEF’S DESK MARCH 2012

It has been a while since we have put pen to paper. This has been due to not much happening and work getting in the way, but over the past two weeks things have livened up.

On the 12th March I went up to Johannesburg to attend a Central Council meeting. This was most informative. Before I say anything about it, I would like to thank Robin and Glenys for the hospitality they showed me, by accommodating and feeding me that evening. It was with a sad heart that I noted that the Boksburg Society had closed its doors. This is a sign of the times, I suppose, the accent is no longer on societies of this nature and they are fading fast. The rest of us will try keeping the flag flying as long as possible. This may inspire younger people to take an interest in things Scottish and there will be a revival.

Sandy and my second visit was our official visit to the Randfontein Society, which was celebrating their centenary.

We drove up on Saturday morning and went to Sandy’s sister where we were staying over the weekend. (Killing two birds with one stone.) On arrival we contacted Norma who informed us that they had arranged a Cocktail Party for us with the Sothern’s. I pleaded ignorance of this, but with the kind assistance of Duncan and Audrey Mac Donald, we attended and had a very good time with them. Norma and Patrick where the perfect hosts that evening and a very good spread was put on.

Sunday morning we attended Randfonteins centenary celebrations. This was our official visit to them. This was also the official visit of Tommy and Lovie. Here we met up with a number of old friends with one heritage; that all being Wilson’s. As we all know, the Wilsons, past and present have very strong ties to the Caledonian movement in Southern Africa and more so with the Randfontein Society.

Gavin and his committee treated us like kings with a brunch that could have fed the five thousand, if necessary. To the ladies and gents that did the preparation and cooking, a big THANKYOU, we enjoyed it greatly. They did not have too many speeches.

Steward Third was there and entertained us with some good piping. We all know that when a piper is needed Steward will always try his best to accommodate.

Once again, thanks to all who made this a memorable weekend.

If this is the standard of receptions we are going to have, it is going to be a great year because, thus far, it has been exceptional. To those Societies we are still to visit, we are looking forward to meeting with you.

Aye

Dave and Sandy Brown

PAST FUNCTIONS

Afternoon Tea: Saturday 21 April.

This was held at the home of Dawn and Andrew Sked and was most enjoyable. Although the usual Port Elizabeth wind decided to come up, we were well protected in their garden. Those people who attended enjoyed a nice relaxing afternoon in good company. Our thanks go to Dawn and Andrew for their hospitality.

Ill members Agnes’s arm has almost mended and she is able to drive and get around, to her relief. Although at our recent committee meeting she was not well at all with a stomach bug.

Avril Schreuder is listening to her Doctor’s advice and trying to take things easy – rather difficult for someone like Avril who is always ‘on the go’! She is still waiting for a final date for her operation.

Audrey Spence, after having a ‘flu injection was taken ill and was admitted to hospital (not as a result of the injection) with Pneumonia and was there for ten days. She is at home and getting on well, but has also been advised to take things easy.

Immediate Past Lady President, Jeanette, recently had a heart attack. Luckily Llewellyn was at home and was able to rush her to hospital where they inserted a stent. She is recuperating nicely at home, but will have to go into hospital later in the year for an operation.

Please keep these people in your thoughts and prayers, and to anyone not feeling too well, we hope you recover soon.

FROM THE CHIEFS DESK APRIL 2012

Greetings and Salutations. I hope all have had a peaceful and safe Easter.

David and I travelled to East London, arriving there on Friday morning after an uneventful journey, except for all the “Stop/Go’s” and we were caught on each of them.

We were warmly welcomed by our host and hostess Cynthia and Elliot Murray. After unpacking and settling in, Elliot took us the Sebourne College fields where the Eastern Cape Gathering was to take place.

Aye

Dave & Sandy

                                                     APRIL 2012 NEWSLETTER
Dear Members
My apologies for this being a later Newsletter than usual. Mary and I have just returned from a holiday in J’burg seeing our three grandchildren – lovely but tiring (I’m sure you all understand the feeling!!). Eddie and Anne send their regards from U K where they are seeing their two grandkids.

As I compile this Newsletter (Sunday 15th) we have had some peculiar weather lately – rain (at last), 350 on Friday and now 180. We don’t know what to expect for this winter!!
A special birthday is coming up – Joan Hoenson will be 90 on 1st May. So, congratulations, Joan, from all of us in the Callies (her phone number, if you wish to phone her, is 021.799.7241).
MEMBERS – PLEASE NOTE – to book functions in April and June – PHONE MARY WALLACE 021 531 4441.
REPEAT OF OUR SPECIAL (AND SERIOUS) APPEAL
There has been a NIL response to our appeal in the March Newsletter. A new Treasurer is a MUST! SO – We desperately need members to offer (now) to come on to Committee at the AGM, 7th July. Some of the present (very long standing) Committee wish to step down (Urszula will not be Treasurer after the AGM). Anne and Eddie have done a sterling job over the past years, and they feel they would just like to come along to functions without all the work preparation which goes on behind the scenes. Every Society or Organization requires a Committee to run affairs. IF WE CANNOT FORM A COMMITTEE AT THE AGM, WE WILL SERIOUSLY HAVE TO CONSIDER CLOSING PINELANDS CALEDONIAN SOCIETY!! IT IS UP TO YOU MEMBERS!!

PHONE GORDON OR MARY at 021 531 4441
At present, there will be NO EVENING FUNCTIONS at the CATHOLIC HALL for APRIL, MAY, JUNE, JULY, AUGUST. Other get-togethers will be happening (see this and subsequent Newsletters).
FUTURE EVENTS:
PAYMENTS
Either (a) direct & internet banking to: Pinelands Caledonian Society; ABSA N1 City Goodwood; Branch Code 420410; Account 0712761849 (add your surname/function as reference).
or (b) cheque payable “Pinelands Caledonian Society” and handed in at the door on arrival at a function (please – no cash if at all possible)
1. APRILFUNCTION – MIKES KITCHEN, MILNERTON, TUESDAY 24th APRIL
We have arranged an evening meal at Mikes Kitchen in Milnerton. Date is Tuesday, 24th April 6.30 for 7.00 – Cost R60.00 including tip. Tuesday (lunch and evening) is Pensioners’ Day at Mikes Kitchen. They provide an excellent and plentiful meal. There is an extensive buffet plus vegetables and salad. The R60.00 includes a free glass of wine or a cool drink. Desserts at an extra cost (R26 to R32) are available and coffee is an extra R12.00. The restaurant is at Centre Court shopping area on Koeberg Road, Milnerton, on the right side coming from town, and is between the main Koeberg Road Robots at Loxton Road and just before you reach the robots at Bosmansdam Road.
BOOK BY PHONING MARY & GORDON WALLACE (021.531.4441) by Monday 23rd April at latest.
We can guarantee you’ll enjoy this evening meal.
2. MAY FUNCTION
Due to further complications, the proposed pub-quiz evening cannot take place in May. Your committee has decided that there will be NO FUNCTION in May.
3. JUNE FUNCTION
The traditional Ladies Lunch (plus husbands) will take place. Details in May Newsletter
4. AGM
Saturday morning, 7th July, 10.00 a m in Pinelands Presbyterian Church Hall (usual venue for AGM)
PAST EVENTS:
The Irish Evening went very well, and there was a pretty good turnout. Good dancing, singing, music and Irish jokes.
NEW MEMBERS:
None this month
NEWS OF MEMBERS:
Margaret Reid has made good progress (she came to the Irish Evening). Margot Johns is still showing a great spirit despite being mainly in a wheelchair. She is moving to a flat at the Oasis Complex, Century City, next month. All the best, Margot! Tommy Cruikshanks (in Knysna) had his 85th birthday on 12th April, but Morag told me he is very frail now, and they will have to arrange a Carer for him (he spent a month in the Frail Care beside where they stay). Happy 90th again to Joan Hoenson for 1st May. We also keep in our thoughts Melvyn Deacon, Margaret Tonner, Fred McQuarrie, Doug Lockett and Dolly Watson. Beryl Stephens is off to UK on 19th April for one month – enjoy yourself, Beryl!
COUNTRY DANCING:
We wish Beryl a wonderful time in the U K, and during her absence Maureen Harrison will be taking the class.

Dear Members

We have been experiencing our typically hot February and March days and I am sure that many of you will be looking forward to the slightly cooler, autumnal days ahead. It’s been good weather for going out and having that tea, coffee or wine or beers etc. with friends.

NEWS FROM SCOTLAND

”The Herald” on Monday 27th February gave 29 facts about February 29th. Some of them make interesting reading:

Ø A leap day now occurs in years that are evenly divisible by four, but not in years divisible by 100 unless the year is also divisible by 400.Therefore 1800 and 1900 were not leap years, but 2000 was.

Ø A person born on February 29th can be called a “leapling” or a “leaper”.

Ø The chance of being born on leap day is about 1:1,461.

Ø Being born on February 29th has the potential to create problems for leaplings, who will have been alive for almost eight decades before they enjoy their eighteenth birthday.

Ø To avoid confusion, the law in Scotland allows that someone born on 29th February will attain the age of 18 on March 1st of their eighteenth year.

Ø Three consecutive generations of the Keogh family have been born on 29th February. Peter Anthony was born in Ireland in 1940, his son, Peter Eric was born in 1964, and Eric’s daughter, Bethany was born in 1996.

Ø It is tradition for women to propose to prospective partners during a leap year. There is some doubt whether they have a whole year in which to pop the question, or must ask it on February 29th.

Ø The tradition is rumoured to have started in 5th century Ireland after St Bridget complained to St Patrick that women were waiting too long for a matrimony request.

Ø An alternative theory claims the convention was enshrined in law by Queen Margaret of Scotland. She reportedly decreed that any man rejecting a woman’s proposal would need to pay the spurned party a fee of up to 100 pounds, or give her a silk dress.

Ø In order to give sharp-eyed, potential suitors fair warning (and perhaps an opportunity to escape), a woman was required to wear red petticoats on the day of the proposal.

Ø Similar folklore exists in Denmark, where leap day is marked on February 24th. There a man who turns down an offer of marriage customarily compensates the refused woman with 12 pairs of gloves.

The following two articles appeared in the “Press and Journal”, a newspaper in Aberdeen, on 01/03/2012:

Port launches drive to win green energy role

Green energy firms believe that Buckie, a Moray port, is perfectly placed to tap into the potential of the 400 turbines they plan to build off its coast. The fishing harbour is already used by vessels that service the Talisman Beatrice Project, a trial wind farm site with two 5MW generators. Buckie Shipyard also has a contract to supply a number of vessels for future wind farm operations.

Power line project to generate massive jobs boost

An energy company completed the first in a string of giant electricity pylons yesterday as part of a multimillion pound Scottish renewable power project. And, as the wraps came off the 160 ft tower near Inverness, Scottish and Southern Energy revealed a major jobs boost for the north. With work on the £538 million Beauty-Denny line under way in earnest, the company is now looking to recruit 500 technicians.

These two endeavours will obviously bring more finance and employment to the area, which I am sure that the people, in the north of Scotland, will welcome. As a matter of interest, if you were staying in Aberdeen for the 5 days, 1st to 5th march, your weather, courtesy of “The Press and Journal”, would have been:

Thurs. 1st March dry with clouds max. 12.1°C min. 5.9°C wind 5.9

Fri. dry with clouds max. 8.7°C min. 5.3°C wind 10.6

Sat. light rain max. 7.9°C min. 2.1°C wind 9.5

Sun. heavy rain max. 7.5°C min. 2.5°C wind 8.0

Mon. dry with cloud max. 8.3°C min. 1.6°C wind 6.7

I wonder how many of you would rather trade our weather for this.

TIME FOR A LAUGH

You know you are a true Scot if…….

McDougal had a dog for sale and was offered £500 for it by an American and £100 by an Englishman. He sold it to the Englishman because he figured it could walk back from London but never swim the Atlantic.

“You’ve woken me up at three in the morning,” said the infuriated chemist, “just for ten pence worth of bicarbonate of soda, when a glass of hot water would have done just as well.”

PAST EVENTS

BURNS’ NICHT

Our celebration of the bard’s birthday took place at a packed Rosedale Centre. The event was a great start to our calendar for 2012. The food was excellent, and the whole evening was enjoyed by all the people present. The programme included excellent piping by the Cape Town Caledonian Pipe Band, and just as excellent was the demonstration of Scottish Country Dancing by the combined Scottish Country Dancer’s Demonstration Team. The dancers called guests who were seated, to join the dancing, and one of the highlights of the evening was to see the beaming face of one of our young members, Bradan Wing, as he enjoyed dancing with them. I am sure that he will want to join in again, at future functions, and that this will spur our other junior members on, to join in as well. Another highlight of the evening was the drumming performance of another junior member, Brogan Reis, who played delightfully, while being accompanied by members of his family, which included his father, his mother, his uncle and his grandfather. The third highlight of the evening was the solo playing by Pipe Sergeant John Decker when he gave us an introduction to Piobaireeachd. Who will forget, too, seeing our Lady President down most of the contents of a Quaich in one swig. The evening was made even more entertaining by the various traditional toasts, and we would like to thank Andrew and Heather, respectively for their delightful rhyming toasts to the lassies and its reply. Furthermore another treat was in store for us when Callum Farquhar, a visitor to our shores, read a selection of Burns’ poetry.

Those who were not there, missed a great evening.

We thank Jacinta and Stuart for organizing and running the function,(as many of us know how much hard work actually takes place beforehand) and thank all the other council members who assisted in the smooth running of the evening.

FUND RAISING SUPPER AT “TAI PING”

The evening was a great success with all the members and guests that came along enjoying good food and great company while supporting the Society. There were lots of raffle prizes and the main prize was worth R1500. Special thanks must go to the owners of Tai Ping Restaurant, Colin

and Pam Wing (members of the Society), for putting together an excellent multi course supper, at cost price, as their contribution to the fund raising purpose of the evening.

FUTURE EVENTS

EASTER TEA

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to postpone this popular get together. It was to have been an afternoon before Easter, of fun and refreshments, at no charge, the South African Legion’s Rosedale Centre. It hasn’t been cancelled – just postponed – so when you see an invitation to the party later in the year, come along and enjoy a lovely afternoon where you will have the opportunity to relax while enjoying the ambience of Caledonian friendship. Keep a lookout for email flyers in your computer inbox or letters in your postbox.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

I hope that all of you have enjoyed the Easter message with time to contemplate the sorrow and joy that it brings. Many folk seem to think that Christmas is the most important time in the Christian calendar. However, in reality, if it wasn’t for Easter, there would be no Christians. Think about it.

I have to confess that, yet again, your newsletter is coming to you somewhat later than we would like because, for a couple of weeks, I’ve not been able to give it the attention it deserves. Your scribe had done all he could and sent the bulk of what you see to me to do my “thing”. Unfortunately, due to the pressures of work and a deterioration in Jacinta’s health, among other things, I was prevented from completing the good work that Stuart, your scribe, had put into what you have before you. My apologies.

It’s been a busy time and not always an easy time for Jacinta and myself since the last newsletter was published. As has been mentioned above we were able to host a very successful Burn’s Nicht. We also attended a Burn’s Nicht Supper hosted by the Pinelands Caledonian Society and another Burn’s Nicht at Kelvin hosted by The Burns Supper Club. Three evenings of Haggis and all very different!

Shortly thereafter we celebrated with the Cape Welsh Society their 130th Anniversary at the Cape Town Club. There was, of course, much singing by everyone, including the Cape Welsh Choir, and somewhere among the speeches I was asked to propose a toast to all Kindred Societies. Just under 90 guests were able to raise many thousands of rand, by auction and raffles, to support charities and to bolster their Society funds. The next day a St David’s Day service was held in St Georges Cathedral and was supported by well over a hundred members and guests, including members of your Council, although, sadly, Jacinta was not well enough to attend with us.

You will see below, mention of the St Patrick’s Eve Dinner Dance held by the Irish South African Association. Again, unfortunately, Jacinta was too sick to attend but she insisted that I go along, accompanied by a long-time friend of hers and member of the Society, Mrs Maureen Fernandes. We were seated at a table with Mrs Sian Erasmus, President of the Cape Welsh Society, and her husband, Johan, as well as four ladies who originated from Glasgow and a couple with Irish and Scots ancestry. The Irish are not known to celebrate anything quietly and the decibel level generated by more than160 guests was quite mind (and ear) boggling. Never-the-less a good time was had by all.

By the way, the next day, Saturday 17th March, was St Patrick’s Day and that night Table Mountain’s flood-lights lit up the mountain in a beautiful shade of GREEN! Did anyone see it? Maybe we’ll see if we can light up the mountain in BLUE on St Andrew’s Nicht!

The next weekend Jacinta was, thankfully, feeling somewhat better and we were able to attend the handing over of Command of the Cape Garrison Artillery at Fort Wynyard on Saturday 24th March. Our pipe band, Cape Town Caledonian Pipe Band, played a very important role in this high profile military ceremony. Major Vidius Archer (being re-assigned) stepped down and handed over command to Lt. Colonel Visser.

On Sunday 25th March we were privileged to be able to lay a wreath, on behalf of the Society, at the Gunners Memorial in Government Avenue in the Company’s Gardens in Cape Town. This was a full Military Parade and proved to be a very moving ceremony including the playing of the Last Post then the firing of (a VERY loud) field gun followed by two minutes silence then the firing of the same (VERY loud) field gun and then the playing of Reveille. During the laying of the various wreaths the South African Army Band played suitable tunes in turn with a piper from the Cape Field Artillery Pipe Band. It so happened that just as we were called forward to collect our wreath the band stopped playing and the piper started and continued playing while we were laying the wreath and returning to our seats. We were told afterwards that it was a quite spectacular moment to see us wearing the tartan and laying the wreath accompanied by the pipes. We were quite unaware of the impact we had on the dignitaries but, afterwards, we felt proud to have been able to show that the Cape Town Caledonian Society salutes and remembers those who have fought and died for freedom.

During the tea and snacks after the ceremony we were able to talk to many of the dignitaries and were asked if the Officers of the Cape Town Highlanders still attended our main functions. We said that they were invited but declined the invitations. We also spoke about the part that Caledonian members played in the various theatres of war. The upshot of all this was that I was invited to attend an ‘open meeting’ in the Officers Mess at the Castle Friday 30th March to be introduced to various officers in the Highlanders so that we could build up a relationship again and also learn more about the role of the Callies volunteers. It was an interesting meeting and more valuable contacts were made which will later benefit the Society.

Just one last thing. I was going through the photos that we had been given and were displayed at our 130th Anniversary celebration last year. I was mightily impressed by one in particular. It shows the Cape Town Caledonian Society Annual Ball held in the City Hall on Friday 10th August 1906.

Just look at the number of guests and, if you look carefully, you’ll see that it’s a military band that’s playing. Oh, that we could host a function something like that again!! We can but dream.

Just out of interest, while I was typing up the above message to you all, I received a Newsletter from the Durban Caledonian Society. It’s the first I’ve received and I noticed that their Society was founded in 1882, so they’re 130 years old this year. Congratulations to Durban, may they grow from strength to strength.

Until the next time

Sláinte Stuart Munro

Fancy a very, very expensive Scotch?

The following article appeared on IOL on February 21st 2012:

Would you pay a million for a bottle of whisky?

Sixty very special bottles have been created to mark Queen Elizabeth’s diamond jubilee in this year.

According to a press release, John Walker & Sons has created a unique blend of grain and malt whiskies all distilled and maturing since 1952.

Finished in a marrying cask of English oak from the Queen’s Sandringham Estate, just 60 of these rare editions, one for each year of the queen’s reign, have been offered for sale at £100,000(about R1.2 million) each. They are on offer to a private list of guests who have been invited to purchase one of 57 bottles.

One bottle was presented to the Queen and two will go into the John Walker & Sons’ vault.

No purchaser’s names have been released.

The press release notes that the luxury crystal decanters were created in a diamond shape with six legs representing each decade of the Queen’s rule. The decanters are decorated with Britannia silver adornments, including a half-carat diamond.

The decanter is accompanied with lead crystal glasses by Cumbria Crystal engraved with wildlife scenes from the Balmoral and Sandringham estates.

All these items are housed in a bespoke cabinet made from oak and native Caledonian pine from the Queen’s Sandringham and Balmoral estates. Every element was hand-made.

The press release notes that master blender Jim Beveridge and his apprentice Matthew Crow explored vast stocks of Scotch whisky to seek out some of the most exceptional casks of whiskies distilled in 1952.

Sandringham oak, provided by kind permission of the Queen, was cut, carved and shaped by hand and jointed seamlessly using age-old techniques to create the two small casks.

Resting at Royal Lochnagar Distillery, on the edge of the Queen’s Balmoral estate, the casks were observed closely through this traditional finishing process, which allowed the flavours to combine gradually, before the bottling on 6 February 2012, 60 years to the day since the Queen acceded to the throne.

Colleen wanted some item from the celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, but unfortunately, I have not received an e-mail stating that I am on the list, so – fortunately – I canna’ buy her one of these! !

ASSOCIATED SOCIETIES

Cape Welsh Society: The Society celebrated their 130th Anniversary on Saturday 3rd March with a St David’s Day Dinner Dance held at the Cape Town Club. Rev Sarah Rowland-Jones delivered the keynote address. She also officiated at and conducted a St David’s Day service in St Georges Cathedral on behalf of the Cape Welsh Society where members of the Cape Town Caledonian Society Council were in attendance.

Irish South African Association: The Cape Town Chapter of the Association held a most successful St Patrick’s Eve Dinner Dance on Friday 16th March at the Lagoon Beach Hotel. It was attended by the Irish Ambassador and messages were read out from the President of Ireland as well as their Prime Minister. There were over 160 guests and they raised R42000 towards charities and funds of the Association when a number of exciting prizes were offered up for auction.

Pinelands Caledonian Society: They held a successful Irish Evening on Saturday 31st March at the Catholic Church Hall in Pinelands to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. The Chairperson of the Irish South African Association, Maureen Sharpe, was there wearing “The Green” in the form of a special green tartan incorporating the colours of the Irish flag.

The Chief and Lady President, Eddie and Anne Stevenson, have left for the UK to spend about ten weeks with their family there and are due back mid- June. We wish them a wonderful time building many fond memories for everyone and having fun doing it.

Cape Town Caledonian Pipe Band: The band has a very full calendar of competitions and events over the next few months, not least of which is the attendance of the full band at the South Coast Gathering held in Durban later in April. This is a graded competition and they will be competing in various graded categories of piping, drumming and drill. We wish them good luck and know that they will bring back many trophies to Cape Town.

“A Bagpiper’s Lament – a Deeply Moving Story”

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the backcountry.

As I am not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn’t stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologised to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played my heart and soul out for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played “Amazing Grace”, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door of my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years!”
